Oftentimes, dog shows are all about a dog’s breed and appearance. However, that’s not the case for the Great Guide Dogs Virtual Dog Show. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Guide Dogs for the Blind in the United Kingdom decided to host an adorable online dog show, and all dogs are welcome!
The submissions will go on for a few weeks with new categories every week. Guide Dogs is excited to get to know all the adorable dogs who enter, and some celebrities have even posted about this exciting experience.
What is it?
From June 5th all the way until July 20th, Guide Dogs will be accepting entries for the virtual dog show. Each week, there will be different fun categories, such as “scruffiest dog in quarantine” and “happiest hound”. One category will be for photos and the other will be for videos. They already announced that the first two categories are “best friends” for photos and “waggiest tail” for videos.
Even celebrities have decided to get in on the fun. Chef Ainsley Harriott and his dog Bobby made an announcement for the virtual dog show. Other celebrities have shared selfies of them with their dogs to promote this event. This includes people like tennis player Laura Robson, singer Katrina from Katrina and The Waves, and TV presenter Sean Fletcher.
Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to enter their dog. All they have to do is share a photo or video that’s related to the specific category. Donations are required to enter, and then you can share your post with Facebook friends to gain votes. All the money will go to the guide dogs in training.
Guide Dogs currently has 8,000 dogs in their care, so they rely heavily on donations. They often spend over £100,000 (about $127,000) a day to support all their dogs. So, this event is not only for fun, but it will also help many guide dogs and blind humans.
How to Enter
If you’re interested in entering, the first step is to join the organization’s Facebook group. It will give you plenty of updates about each week’s categories. Then, you need to make a donation through Facebook before submitting your photo or video. You can post your submission in the category’s event, which will be shared in the group.
Then, share your post and spread the word! The five posts with the most ‘likes’ will move on to the semi-finals. Also, you should encourage others to donate too. The semi-finals will then take place toward the end of July, and you will need to donate to place your vote. Not only will the submissions be adorable, but they’ll also be benefitting a great cause.
“The charity Guide Dogs does such fantastic work all year round supporting people with sight loss, and that work is more important than ever now,” said Ainsley Harriott. “I know I’m finding lockdown hard enough, but for people with sight loss, social isolation can happen every day. That’s why Bobby and I are so excited to support the Great Guide Dogs Virtual Dog Show.”
If you think your dog has what it takes to be a star while helping both dogs and people in need, enter them in the virtual dog show. Even if you aren’t interested in the current categories, there are new opportunities each week. Check out the Facebook group to see updates on the event.
