It’s National Dog Week! In honor of our furry companions, Trupanion looked at their database to identify each region’s signature breeds—that is, the breeds that are more frequent in their respective region than the rest of the US.
Mixed breeds top the list as the most popular dogs in the US—followed closely by the Labrador Retriever. These trusty sidekicks show up as the most popular dogs in many major cities across the country. However, when looking at particular regions, Trupanion, a company that offers medical insurance for cats and dogs, found that each part of the country has its own particular tastes when it comes to dog breeds. While Labrador Retrievers, mixed breeds, and German Shepherds are still the most popular dogs everywhere, across the nation, the signature breeds below are far more frequent in their respective regions than the rest of the U.S.
Next time you’re walking down the street, pay attention to the breeds you see passing by. Do you or someone you know have one of your region’s signature breeds?
